In 1969 Ford no longer offered the 390 GT engine as an option and replaced it with the 390 IP (Improved Performance). This engine shared snorkels with the 428 CJ except it had a step down ring welded to the bottom hole of the snorkel to reduce the size from 2 3/4 inches to 2 inches for a paper hose. The snorkel is easy to identify because of its distinctive step on the flange (see detail) along with the step down ring.
