Reading:
  1. Babbie, Chapter Two, pages 45 to 61 (42 to 59 in the  Third Edition)  We will not cover the section on "some social science paradigms," which is more relevant for sociology than criminal justice majors.  You may find this section useful for the Social Theory class.
  2. Ted and Benjamin Goertzel, "Capital Punishment and Homicide Rates:  Sociological Realities and Econometric Distortions"  In Sakai/Resources/Week Seven  CapitalPunishmentHomicide.pdf

The midterm will have two parts:  a multiple choice part and a statistics part.  The multiple choice items will be similar to those on our weekly quizzes.  The statistics ones will be similar to those on the statistics quiz.

Study Guide for the Midterm:

We covered Babbie, Chapters 1, 14, 4, 5, 6 and
Chapter Two, pages 45 to 61 (42 to 59 in the  Third Edition).  The best thing is probably just to read the chapters!  Another approach is to try the review questions at the end of each chapter.  Also, if you go to the Companion Site for the textbook, you can click on "select a chapter" and then click on "flash cards" and then on New Edition Tutorial Quizzing.  These may be helpful, but some of them are overly abstract and difficult to follow.  Use them if you find them useful.  The best material is actually the text of the chapters which is quite well written as these things go, except perhaps for Chapter Six.

In Sakai/Resources you can find the powerpoints for each week.  These help you to focus on the essential points.  You can also find the transcripts of the weekly Chat Room classes in the Chat Room.  You need to click on the "past 3 days" box and change it to "all messages".  You may find the conversational format of the chat room helpful.

In SAKAI, you can find all the quizzes you have taken and see the correct answers.  This is probably the single most useful way to review for the multiple choice part of the midterm.

The Descriptive Statistics, Statistics Overview, and Optional Statistical Practice Sheet are useful for the statistics part of the exam.  All are on the WEB page for Week Five.  Do not worry about the margin of error questions on the Optional Practice Sheet, these will be covered after the midterm.  There are also some statistics examplex on the WEB page for week Five.   If you can do the problems on the Statistics Quiz you will be fine:   Row, column and total percentages.  Mean, Mode, Median, Range, Standard Deviation.  Be sure to bring a calculator.

A copy of a midterm exam from a previous semester is in Sakai/Resources/WeekSeven.
