September 10, 2004 www.seacoastonline.com Dover Community News - Dover, New Hampshire Historical society presents Gravestone Girls Sept. 10 Dover Historical Society announces its first fall program, The Gravestone Girls, presented by Maggie White and Brenda Sullivan, on Sept. 10, at the Dover Public Library, beginning at 7 p.m. Discover the historical significance of gravestone art and symbolism and what they represent about the lives and times of past generations. What started as a hobby for two enterprising women has become a craft which produces decorative folk art pieces and provides historical education rooted in the rich chronicles of our New England cemeteries. Their objective is cemetery preservation of these great spaces and "living classrooms." This unique history is captured through gravestone rubbing and castings. The Gravestone Girls teach safe and fun gravestone rubbing techniques. They have lectured throughout New England on folk art, symbolism, and the history which resides right in our backyards. For a preview, visit their Web site at www.GravestoneGirls.com. This event is free and open to the public.
