30 Hour wooden movement made by E. & G.W. Bartholomew (Type 8.136), and is correct for this clock. CASE DIMENSIONS & CONSTRUCTION Base=16 1/4" , Height=34", Depth=4 1/2" Carved half-columns are 23 3/4".
Mahogany veneer used throughout case.
LABEL INFORMATION
Good label stating: "Improved / Clocks, / Manufactured and Sold / by / R. & I. Atkins, / Bristol, Conn . Warranted if Well Used."
Printer: P. Canfield, Printer, Hartford, Conn.
There is a small over pasted label in the lower left which states:
"Chas, F. Olmsted, / Jeweler, / Ashley, Ohio"
Philemon Canfield (1786-1864) moved to Hartford, Ct. in 1814. He was already an established printer at this point in his career, and his services were used by many of the early wooden movement clock making firms in Connecticut. He sold his printing/publishing business in 1839 to Case, Tiffany & Burnham. (image to left)
DIAL INFORMATION
The original wood dial is in excellent condition and features black Arabic letters with gold leaf chapter ring and gold leaf over gesso spandrels and center decorations. The Chapter ring is 9".
The dial glass is original and is 10 1/8" x 10 1/8", it is held in place by the original putty.MISC FEATURES
The clock features heavily carved splat, and claw feet. It is unknown if the carved pineapple finials are original but the certainly do fit the clock nicely.
The Terry type hands and pendulum bob appear to be original.
There is a old repair tag inside the case that states: "Amos G. Avery / 219 Lincoln Avenue / Amherst, Massachusetts. / #10 / 1939". Note: Amos Avery was a director of the NAWCC c. 1950.
This clock has what appears to be the original metal dust covers over the weight pulleys.ACQUIRED FROM Acquired this clock from a good friend, and private collector of early American clocks, who has had this clock in his personal collection for quite some time. CONDITION WHEN ACQUIRED
Case is in excellent condition with no veneer loss. The mirror tablet is a replacement and measures 13 3/4"H x 10 1/8"W.
RESTORATION November 2009 - Disassembled movement and cleaned in a solution of Boiled Linseed Oil, Mineral Spirits, and paraffin wax. Glued several loose movement posts, reassembled, oiled escape wheel, and reassembled. Set clock to running. HISTORICAL DATA
The Atkins & Downs partnership (Anson Downs, Rollin Atkins and Irenus Atkins) dissolved in 1832 when Anson Downs left Bristol. Rollin and Irenus Atkins carried on the business and produced clocks under the name R. & I. Atkins.
