"Clocks Are Us"

Samples of KL's Horological Handy Work

This page contains items which KL painted, gold-leafed, or stenciled with bronzing powders. She has created some replacement tablets for clocks in our collection (links to those clocks are included in the description if applicable), as well as re-stenciled some columns and splats. The paintings below are replicas of original clock tablets. Unfortunately, most of these paintings are in picture frames hanging on our walls, because we didn't have any clocks that needed a new tablet of these sizes or types. I have also put up a few of the dials she and I have created or restored.

KL assists in teaching reverse glass painting, transfer painting, gold leafing, and dial painting classes for our local NAWCC chapter. Several of the glasses shown below have won awards at the NAWCC National Horological Crafts Competitions.

Column & Spat Shelf Clock Tablet, size ~ 9" x 12"

This tablet is a reverse painted transfer of the Merchants Exchange in Philadelphia.  It is an image commonly found in shelf clocks of the period. A laser copy of an original engraving is applied to the back of the glass using decalb as a base.  When dry, the paper is removed with a damp sponge, leaving a thin transparent layer of the paper and the ink work from the engraving.  The image is then reverse painted.  This tablet was done for one of the clocks in our collection Jonathan Frost wooden movement shelf clock.

Grandfather Clock Dial.

This dial is from a mid 18th century grandfather clock. It was in very bad shape, with very little of the original markings. Painted spandrels and floral design on top of dial, inked Roman numerals. Minute markers not completed yet.

Seth Thomas Miniature Ogee Dial.

This was my first attempt at restoring an actual metal dial. This dial had a replacement paper dial glued to the dial pan when we acquired the clock. The paper dial was stripped off, and the dial restored using a picture of an original Seth Thomas miniature ogee clock dial. This dial was restored for one of the clocks in our collection: Seth Thomas Miniature Ogee

Chauncey Jerome Brass Ogee Dial.

This dial was painted silver and had a very poor restoration attempt to put the chapter rings and letters on it by a previous owner.  I stripped the silver paint off to reveal the original brass dial pan.  I restored the dial to it's original condition using techniques learned at Chapter 124's dial painting class.  This dial belongs to one of the clocks in our collection: Chauncey Jerome Ogee.

Top image was the dial in the condition when we received the clock, bottom image is the completed restoration.

Jonathan Frost 30 hour Shelf Clock Dial

This dial was created for one of the clocks in our collection: Jonathon Frost Reverse Ogee & Splat.  The original dial is in poor enough condition that I wanted to create a new one for display purposes.  The original dial will be kept with the clock.  The new dial was made from 1/4" birch and has the same dimensions and design as the original.  The inked chapter rings and letters were applied with a .30 technical pen, and KL painted the spandrels with oil paints.  Added a new set of winding hole grommets and attached to the clock in the same fashion as the original.

Seth Thomas No. 18 Wall Clock Dial

This dial was one that I restored for a friend.  The dial that was on the clock was a replacement paper dial, the seconds hand was missing as well as any indication of a seconds bit on the paper replacement.  I stripped the paper dial off, and cleaned the original dial pan down to bare metal.  I then applied 2 coats of antique white spray paint to the dial pan.  Once dry, I applied a coat of spray varnish to use as a base for the inking.  The varnish surface was roughened up with rottenstone, then the Chapter rings, minute markers, and Roman letters were applied with a .35 technical pen and India ink.  The seconds bit and the Seth Thomas logo were done with reproduction transfers.

I used a picture of an original Seth Thomas No. 18 Regulator as a guide to duplicate the dial as close to original as possible.

The top image is the replacement paper dial that was on the clock when I received it.

The bottom image is the restored dial.

Half Columns & Splats

Restored Splats for half-column & splat clocks

These are three splats that were created for clocks in our collection.  They were made using patterns from original splats and using period wood.  The stencils are reproductions from actual clocks and were done with various colors of bronzing powders.

Middle image: Atkins & Downs Splat

Bottom Image: Hopkins & Alfred Splat

Restored Columns for half-column & splat clock

These are original columns from one of the Half Column & Splat clocks in our collection (Atkins & Downs).  A previous owner had tried to duplicate the stencil designs by hand, and it was very poorly done.  We striped the splats down to bare wood, and applied a new coat of black paint.  We then applied the historically correct stencils using various colors of gold bronzing powders.
