Russian Wild Boar

Here I am with a 200 pound Russian Boar that I shot with my .58 caliber round ball shooting muzzleloader. This rifle began life as a Thompson Center "Big Boar". I bought it used and pretty beat and I immediately threw the barrel away and had a barrel made for it. The barrel was made by Bill Moody and he did a great job on it. Willy Young of Wakon Bay Outfitters blued the barrel, set a breech plug in it and the sight I sent him on it and he always does a great job. I love the rifle now.

The new barrel is Forsythe Rifled (look it up) to handle tremendous powder charges while shooting very accurately. In this case I used a 140 grain 2fg Elephant Powder charge with a patched 570 ball in front of it and I was vastly over-gunned. I shot clear through the boar and dug a hole in the ground behind him with that load.

Mind you, this was a "preserve hunt" and wild hunts are much more "me". I'd be very cautious about preserve hunts in the future. I'd never done one before and a guy I knew said he'd heard good things about the place I made this kill so I went along with him. Well, it wasn't good. It wasn't even a hunt. It was a pig killing. However, the boar meat was quite good so, it was what it was.
