| COMES THE DAWN | VICTIMOLOGY |
| WEST WING (NBC): Martin Sheen may be the new
Sam Waterston, all right, in the category of "actors I
swore I could never enjoy." But it's more a case of apt
casting than much else: Sheen is to acting what
lawyers are to politics. Still, Richard Schiff ("I feel like
I've just gotten screwed with my pants on") and
Allison Janney are among the more enjoyable actors
on TV. And Rob Lowe's redeemed. ALSO: blew the
call on SEX IN THE CITY, the 2nd season of which
hits a hilarious stride. Favorite episodes: The Gay
Straight Guy; Four Chics at a Funeral. Catching up
with double-shot reruns. SPORTS NIGHT: while the babification of Felicity Huffman is both gratuitous and demeaning, awardedeExtra points for Tom and Dan's debate about the term "secular." Y2K episode had dance fever. | Dan Wolfe strikes out with LAW & ORDER's
SPECIAL VICTIMS (NBC), and we LIKE Mariska
Hargitay (Jayne Mansfield's daughter, who co-starred
as Anthony Edwards' ER girlfriend, and appeared in
HBO's BREAST MEN); POPULAR (Fox) blecch;
NOW AND AGAIN (ABC) the serial culled from its
own trailers. TALK magazine ran an inset on 40-second anti-skip portable CD technology, as if it were news. FELICITY: haircut works, Noel's getting in big trouble, Ben has no idea what hit him, Julie's coming around, but WE WANT MORE ELENA (Tangi Miller)! |

| VICTIM OF ITS OWN SUCCESS | UNSPLIFFED |
| Pixelon.com's jammed-up server during its Halloween blowout with the Who (intimidated back onstage by the CSN&Y reunion). | Susan Faludi has a great theme, she may even be more right than wrong. But this is not first-class reporting, and it's even further from first-class writing. Up there with Naomi Wolfe advising Al Gore to be more of an Alpha Male. If only Libbie had hired Norman Mailer. |
| COMING AROUND AGAIN | I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP |
| Lush, SPLIT (4AD) Superdrag, HEAD TRIP IN EVERY KEY (Elektra) | Orchestral arrangement of Marshall Crenshaw's "Whenever You're On My Mind" heard on Lansing airport muzak system. |
