ALMOST FAMOUS (DreamWorks) Widely misreviewed, this sweet-natured rock film has the insider hubris to use the tightly controlled Led Zeppelin (acoustic) tracks Crowe got Page/Plant permission for as . . . background mood music. The larger irony, of course, is that Crowe turns out to be a far better movie-maker than he ever was a rock writer. |

CHERRY, by Mary Karr (Viking) Sequel to LIAR'S CLUB. BLACK MASS, by Dick Lehr, Gerard O'Neill (Public Affairs) Spent the month trying to cast this movie, and while Billy Bulger is a no-brainer (Zbigniew Brzezinski, Carter's National Security Advisor), Whitey Bulger is larger, more menacing than any mafioso I've ever seen on the screen. |
Marshall Sella's NEW YORK TIMES magazine cover piece was a great read that skidded around its unstated thesis: how DARE comedians express their political opinions. CHOICE BIT: A recent "Late Show" segment called Campaign Souvenirs featured a toy electric chair (incredibly, with an orange-clad male doll strapped in) that lighted up to read vote bush. But the real punch line -- the big laugh, prepped for and received -- was a jump cut to a stagehand named Tom, whose job it was to actually run the switch for the toy. |
