Thanks to Dave Upham of Toronto ONT for sending me tapes of the 2 Apr 99 Jefferson Starship (electric) show at the Sweet Basil Club in Tokyo, Japan. They're audience tapes, so the sound quality is not fantastic, but are still enjoyable.(1) The band sounds great, and they play the whole gamut of Airplane - Starship - Balin from Takes Off up through Windows of Heaven.
A couple of highlights - "All Fly Away" - Great vocals by Diana, spectacular harmonies and a nice "Slick" solo; a nice effort showcasing what the Jeffersons do best. On "Other Side" - A LONG Jack solo - And a great solo by Chris Smith, beginning with a vibe copped from Deep Purple's Made in Japan.
This was just the first night of a whole week of shows. I've heard nothing on how the rest of the week went!
Banter - Before "Today"
Marty - Here's a song that goes way back to Surrealistic Pillow.
Paul -It's in a new movie, I just read.
Marty - Really? Which?
Paul - That movie about the rocket ship, and the kids.
Marty - "Oh yeah? Ooooh, man, royalties!
Before "America"
Marty - We wanna wish this goes out for peace.
Paul - War, too.
Marty - Peace please, please peace.
(1) There is some kind of bias towards the high frequency end. I'm not sure if it's a tape speed or a microphone problem. In any case, it's not so bad during the second set.
