Paulie, Can You Hear Me?

I logged into an Internet chat session sponsored by J&R Music on 14 Sep 1999. A moderator was passing questions from the riff-raff to Paul Kantner and Diana Mangano, and I managed to get a few questions through. Since there was little chance for follow-ups, and no chance for a real dialogue, I tried to ask short, specific questions. I was pretty successful I guess, since all four of my questions were passed along.

I was wondering if Diana was a Great Society fan, since songs like "Sally Go 'round the Roses", and "Darkly Smiling" have turned up at Jefferson Starship shows since she joined. But I guessed wrong, because when I asked "Who's the Great Society fan in JS?", Paul answered "I've always been a Great Society fan," and Diana said "I liked their versions of 'White Rabbit' and 'Somebody to Love.' "

I've been hoping for years for Diana to develop an interest in songwriting, so as to add another voice to the band's creative element. It might also lead to some interesting collaborations with Paul and Marty, assuming that they're interested. So I asked something like, "Diana, are you a songwriter?" and she answered with, "No, but I dream of writing a big hit song!" Paul added that he's trying to encourage Diana to do some writing, so there's hope.

Next, I asked "For Paul: Were there any overdubs on Bless its Pointed Little Head?" Paul: "I don't think so, but how would I know?", probably referring to one of his favorite lines, "If you remember the sixties, you weren't there!"

Lastly, I asked what they thought of Grace's book. Paul said he didn't like it, because "It wasn't written in her own voice." When he told Grace this on the phone, she hung up on him! Diana hadn't read it, seemingly because she believed Paul's review.
