Boy Scout Rank

The Scouting Program recognizes a boy’s accomplishments by presenting him with an award that indicates the level of his achievement. Those awards occur in the following order starting at the lowest rank: Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, and Eagle. The Scout Handbook describes the requirements for each rank. There is also a book available at the Scout Office called Requirements 2002. It gives a concise list of requirements for rank advancement, merit badges, and special awards. Four times per year a Court of Honor is held to formally present scouts there advancements.

Merit Badges

Merit Badges may be earned from over 100 different fields of interest. There are 12 required merit badges for the Eagle rank. Each merit badge has a booklet that describes the requirements and provides more details on the subject. Troop 5 has a small library containing merit badge books.

An approved counselor is required to award a merit badge.

Uniforms

The members of Troop 5 will wear Class A uniforms at troop activities; this means a Scout shirt, pants, belt, neckerchief, and neckerchief slide. We will begin and close our troop meetings with a color guard.

The Scout shirt, pants and other parts of the uniform can be purchased at the Scout office at Sandscrest. You can also order from the Scout Catalog.

For bargains you can look on EBAY or purchase seconds from the Scout Catalog. We will also have a closet of uniforms for Scouts to borrow.

Attendance

The activities of Troop 5 are for Boy Scouts. Therefore it is not appropriate for girls to attend Troop 5 campouts, other trips, or troop meetings; or for boys who are not registered with the Boy Scouts of America to attend campouts or other trips. Part of what makes Scouting special is the opportunity it offers for boys to have fellowship with other boys in all the activities Scouting offers. On campouts, Scouts will take responsibility for camping and cooking as patrols.

·  There is no attendance requirement for membership. Sports are the biggest competition to Boy Scout activities. The advantage is Scouting is year round. So once the season comes to an end, the boys can resume his Scouting activity full time.

· There is a very strict attendance requirement for rank advancement and leadership positions.

· All troop activities are considered when rating attendance. The meetings can be considered the practice sessions while the outdoor activity is the big game.

Fund Raisers

The troop is responsible for purchasing and maintaining its own equipment. To keep this program going, we do one fundraiser per year by selling popcorn (the same as with the Cub Scouts). The total sale from this fundraiser is split three ways: among the popcorn supplier, the council, and the troop.

As part of the incentive to have the Scouts sell popcorn, the troop's portion of the sale is split with the Scout. Of the 33 percent earned by the troop, the split is done in this manner: The first $30 goes to the troop; the second $30 goes to the Scout; and any earnings above that are split 50/50 between the troop and the Scout. For example, if a Scout sells $300, $100 goes to the popcorn supplier, $100 goes to the council, $50 goes to the troop, and $50 goes to the Scout.

The Scout's earnings are kept in an account by the troop. The Scout can use the money to pay for Scouting events, Scouting supplies that are listed in the Scouting catalogue or are in the Scout office, or other camping supplies.

Participation is mandatory!

If a Scout transfers to another troop, his money will transfer with him. If a Scout leaves the Scouting program completely, his money reverts back to the troop.

Weekend Activities

We will attempt to have one outdoor activity per month. Typically this is a campout. The campout will be either in tents or cabin. The entire year will be planned in August after the Council calendar is published. The events can be on Scout Reservations, State Parks, or private property with permission of the owner.

Any adult interested in helping with an event is invited. You do not have to be a registered Scout adult to attend a campout.

Summer Camp

Our primary campsite for summer camp is Ft. Steuben near Clendening Lake in Ohio . This is the cornerstone of every scout’s career. The Troop spends a week (Sunday – Saturday) each July at summer camp. There are several activities and chances for advancement.

Activities include water sports, boating, scout skills, crafts, rifle/archery, and first aid. Several Eagle required merit badges are offered. First year Scouts attend a special program while “veteran” Scouts can earn up to 6 merit badges.

Cost is $135 per scout. See the fundraiser section for method of earning money.

Discipline

We expect the Scouts of Troop 5 to abide by the Scout Law and Scout Oath. Therefore we expect the Scouts of Troop 5 to show respect to other Scouts and to adult leaders. We take seriously Scouting’s mission of encouraging moral development.

We will not tolerate Scouts abusing other Scouts physically or verbally or damaging property. If this behavior is reported and verified, the adult leadership will first attempt to resolve the problem immediately. If the problem continues, progressive discipline is taken with each new complaint in the following order.

1. A warning is issued to the Scout involved.

2. The Scout is suspended from all troop activities for one month.

3. The Scout is removed from the troop.

Parents are contacted for each step.

The District Executive is contacted for steps 2 & 3.

Questions or problems

If you as a parent have any questions or problems concerning the troop please do not hesitate to bring the problem to the leadership. We will work with you to resolve the problem to the satisfaction of all involved.

You can contact the Scoutmaster or Committee Chairman. For the troop the Committee Chairman and committee members have the last word on any major issues. If we do not address your concerns to your satisfaction, the Scout office and District Executive should be contacted.
