| ENGINE COMPARTMENT & HOOD LIGHT INSTALL |
|
Ford stopped installing under hood lights on Mustang Cobra's after 1996. I always thought it was a convenient accessory to be able to see what's under the hood after the sun sets. So I decided to purchase and install the light assembly and wire harness from a 1996 Mustang Cobra and install it on my 1999 Cobra. |
Light Assembly This light has a ball bearing type contact. When the light assembly is vertical the ball bearing fall down closing the contacts turning the light on. When the light assembly is horizontal the ball bearing disengages the contacts turning the light out. Thus with the hood up the light comes on, the hood down the light goes out, automatically. Pretty cool I thought!! The light assembly comes with a plastic push pin to secure to the hood. I used a 1/4" drill to make a hole in the hood support to simply push the wire loom pins securely in place. And I used an existing hole in the hood support to push the second snap alignment pin to secure to the hood. Takes a standard 906 light bulb. |
Wire Assembly The wire harness includes attached plastic push pins to secure to the hood. I used a 1/4" drill to make holes in the hood support to simply push the wire loom pins securely in place. |
Inline glass holder and 15 AMP glass fuse |
| The
install was very simple.
Plug one connector into the light assembly, cut off the other end and install wire connectors on each wire. Connect about 3' of 14 gage wire to each connector (one for positive, one for negative) Add an inline glass fuse holder and 15A fuse to the positive wire (Available at Autozone or PepBoys) Tape the two wires together every 6" with electrical tape the length of the wires, just to keep them together. Wrap the length of the two wires in black plastic wire loom (Available at Autozone or PepBoys) Route the wire loom the same way as the existing wire looms around your main fuse box and up up to the battery. Connect a circular wire terminal to the end of each wire. Attach positive wire to battery with a nut. Attach negative wire terminal to battery with a nut. Secure wire loom to other battery cables with plastic wire ties. That's it. Enjoy. |
![]() I ran the wire harness down the hood support by drilling three holes along the way to secure the plastic push pins. I then drilled a fourth hole to secure a push pin on the firewall, positioned in such a way that when the hood closes, the wire harness bends in the appropriate direction. |
![]() Light automatically comes one when the hood opens, shuts off when hood closes. |
