Welcome to the United
Baptist Church 30 Spring Street,
Newport, Rhode
Island
|
|
Our congregation has a rich heritage
dating back to 1638. In the spring of that year,
Dr. John Clarke, one of the original settlers of
Aquidneck Island, began to hold worship services
in the newly formed town of Pocasset, now called
Portsmouth. One year later, he joined eight others
in helping to establish Newport in the southern
part of the island, where Dr. Clarke continued to
hold church services. Five years later, in 1644,
he guided his congregation to become a Baptist
church following the New Testament teaching of
baptizing believers who professed a personal faith
in Jesus Christ.

|
A strong advocate for religious
liberty, Dr. Clarke was instrumental in securing
this freedom for all people in Rhode Island. In
1663, he wrote and acquired from King Charles II a
new Royal Charter for the colony. That charter
guaranteed full liberty of conscience to
every person in Rhode Island. Simply put, this
meant that no one would be persecuted by the civil
government of the colony for matters pertaining to
religious belief. |

Along with upholding our vital
Baptist heritage, we are dedicated to
ministering to the people of Newport and Aquidneck
Island. Our purpose is to guide people
from where they are to where, under God, they
ought to be in Jesus Christ. Through
worship, study and service, we are seeking to
fulfill the two great commandments to love
God and to love our neighbor.

|
With open hearts, we invite you to join
us in this journey of faith and to experience the
presence of God's grace, peace and joy.
