FANS Students Meet to Share Ideas and Experiences

The FANS 12 & 24 Hour Run supports the FANS Scholarship Fund. FANS, which stands for Family Advocate Network System, is a program of Pillsbury United Communities in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Pillsbury initiated the FANS project in 1989 with a group of sixth-grade students from North and South Minneapolis. The Project has a vision of sending inner-city kids to college or to another post-secondary institution. FANS works with the youth and their families in a wide variety of activities geared to providing support for the vision.

The program offers:

To date, 101 FANS students have graduated from high school, starting with that initial group of sixth graders who graduated in 1996. In 2006 there were 22 graduates. Over $365,000 in scholarships have either been distributed or promised to those who have graduated. FANS students are attending or have completed programs at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis Community College, the University of Chicago, Dunwoody Institute, Normandale Community College, and many others. The 2004 race saw the completion of the circle, as a former FANS student ran the race in order to provide others with the same opportunities he'd received through the program.

This is where you come in ...
Each year, more than 1,000 individuals contribute to the FANS Scholarship Fund through the Fund's sole source, the FANS 12 & 24 Hour race. They do this by:

   Volunteering
Hundreds of volunteers are needed throughout the 24 hours of the runs. We always need help on the fourth shift - 1:30 am to 8 am. Contact Tom Lundgren at 612.929.7607 or at tom55410@gmail.com to sign up. Read about the wide variety of FANS volunteer opportunities. Also, you may check with the volunteer desk at the race site on race day to see where volunteers are needed.

Running in the 12 Hour or 24 Hour Event
The goal of many entrants is to go as far as they can in 12 or 24 hours; others have personal goals of obtaining new mileage records of 40, 50 or more miles. Walking and running, they persist, into the night, spurred on by the camaraderie of old or newly-discovered friends. You too can be a part of this! Obtain $150 or more in pledges for a free FANS entry. FANS will collect your pledges following the race. Want to know more about the events? Check out our Frequently Asked Questions page.

Pledging or Contributing a Fixed Amount
Someone you know may be asking for your pledge, often for a certain amount per mile. Or, you may wish to 'adopt' a runner or contribute a fixed amount.

All contributions are tax deductible.
