Boat Building, 1820-1860 During the 19th century, boats and barges were the most efficient means to transport goods long distances. Heavy, broad-beamed freight barges transported goods from one point to another. About 40 of these vessels were constructed in Ticonderoga by John Harris and Henry Cossey. In 1847, the Port Henry Iron Company also built seven canal boat and one schrooner at Ticonderoga.
