The Tanning
Industry
Before
animal hides could be used they needed to be tanned or preserved. Hides were
tanned by scraping the inside to remove tissues, then they were soaked in a
mixture of water manure and salt for several days. They were rinsed again, then
soaked in water and hemlock bark for several months to make the leather
flexible. Finally, the leather is dried and polished and is ready to use.
