Lifespan
Religious Education, 'Rainbow Sunday School' @ UUC
Thank you for your interest in
Children and Family Programs at UUC. Programs are formulated by a part time UUC
staff, Director and a volunteer Lifespan
Religious Education Committee. Programs are open to all, regardless of religious
background or present beliefs, non-beliefs and wonderings. We come to worship,
celebrate, learn and grow together, consistent with our 7 Unitarian
Universalist Principles formulated and made easier for children to
remember by matching with the colors of the Rainbow.
1)
Respect the importance and value of all being (red).
2) Offer fair and kind treatment to all (orange).
3) Yearn to learn throughout life
(yellow).
4) Grow by exploring ideas and values together (green).
5) Believe in our Ideas and act on them
(blue).
6) Insist on peace, freedom and justice for all (indigo).
7) Value our interdependence with nature (violet).
Unitarian Universalism stresses the worth of each
individual and the power of community. Our education program seeks to develop a
sense of belonging in a caring community, critical reflection that leads to
personal understanding and commitment, and joy in the process of living and
learning. With our youngest children we begin by fostering a sense of personal
worth, an awareness of social context, and an appreciation for the wonders of
life. As the children progress through the program we introduce them to the
history of the human quest for religious meaning, the responsibilities of
membership in the human community, and the process of creating a self-sustaining
religious life through adulthood using Unitarian Universalist Principles as a
guide.
What
we do, A typical Sunday:
Childcare
is available from 9 30 am, so Parents can participate in the Discussion
Group, Choir or other activities. Childcare is also available during the service
for Nursery aged children while older children participate in their Rainbow
Sunday School classes. Childcare is provided, by paid UUC staff. (Outside of
Sunday, Childcare is provided on request for Adult RE Classes and other
Congregation activities).
RAINBOW SUNDAY SCHOOL, September-May
11
am Children start in the Morning Worship service every week. After the Story for
all ages they leave to go their Rainbow Sunday School Classes. We offer classes
for: Pre-school, K- Grade 2, Grade 3-5(6), Grade (6)7-9 and a Youth Group during the
Sunday School year.
Classes finish about the same time as the service. Children snack in their
classroom or play on the outside playground.
Inter generational Worship Services are planned when there are 5 Sundays in a
month or special occasions.
SUMMER PROGRAM
Children continue to start in the 11am Service. Younger Children will have
activities in the Nursery. Older Children meet in a multi age group.
Our
Lifespan Religious Education Program, prepares children for the ongoing mystery
and wonder of life.
The
Rainbow Sunday School Program teaches
from the sources of our UU beliefs encompassed in our UU principles: stories of
prophetic men and woman in history, ethical and spiritual wisdom in world
religions, our Judæo-Christian Heritage, reason and science, nature and the
sense of wonder we all share. Classes often take part in social justice
projects. UUA Curriculums are taught by volunteer teachers. Children will learn
through stories, crafts, music and play.
We
recognize that Parents are the main conduit for the spiritual upbringing of
their children. We support parents by providing Parent Education classes.
Social Activities provide opportunities outside of Sunday to forge bonds and
build community and offer discussion in relaxed atmosphere. As well as
Congregation programs like Dinners for 9 there are twice yearly Camping,
Picnics, Ice Skating, Corn Maize and Clay Center trips.
