Curriculum Map @ UUC

The Living Tradition we share draws from many Sources:

  • Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life;
  • Words and deeds of the prophetic women and men which challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love;
  • Wisdom from the world's religions which inspires us in our ethical and spiritual life;
  • Jewish and Christian teachings which call us to respond to God's love by loving our neighbors as ourselves;
  • Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science and warn us against idolatries of the mind and spirit;
  • Spiritual teachings of Earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature (Added at General Assembly, June 1995).

At UUC we choose curriculums or blend specialized curriculums, that will expose our children to all of the sources of our beliefs, suitable to their age, in any given year. Our volunteer teachers usually work in month blocks so sometimes a month has a theme. Lessons though are self contained, so you can join a class at anytime. Attend as much as possible to get the full benefit.

Children  start in the Sunday morning worship service; then  go to their classes after ‘The Story for All  Ages'. Starting in the service gives children a wonderful exposure to the people and life of the congregation, worship practices and music. There will be announced inter generational worship services throughout the year.

Social Justice and Awareness Projects are an important part of our Lifespan Religious Education program. They may be part of a curriculum or supplemental. Each group will take part in the UU Service Committee ‘Guest at Your Table’ program in November.   Children have raised money for Covenant House, and collect goods for their food pantry, and Adopt a Family at Christmas. We participate in UNICEF programs  and have raised money for The Afghan Mobile Mini Circus; and walked to raise Money for Children’s Diabetes.

Special Programs outside of our Sunday Morning classes may be arranged. These include Coming of Age Programs and Our Whole Lives, sexuality programs, for older children.

Curriculum Choices are open to being  updated by new curriculums, but will follow the same concept. Our Curriculum map is adapted from an outline found at the Church of the Larger Fellowship. The CLF is an online community of Unitarian Universalists, a link is found on our Links page.
