Meditation Circle at UUC

“From one point of view we can say that we have human bodies and are practicing the Buddha’s teachings and are thus much better than insects. But we can also say that insects are innocent and free from guile, whereas we often lie and misrepresent ourselves in devious ways in order to achieve our ends or better ourselves. From this perspective, we are much worse than insects.

~ H.H. the Dalai Lama

The Meditation Circle is a meditation group in the Buddhist insight or vipassana tradition, that meets every Tuesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at UUC.  Beginners are welcome and you do not need to be a Buddhist to benefit from sitting practice. The 'MC' is a lay support group for people interested in meditation or who wish to deepen their practice through the support of a meditation sangha. Members come from a wide variety of spiritual traditions and backgrounds. Bring a cushion if you have sat in meditation before or chairs are available. Instruction and guided meditation is offered to people just starting out. Come join the Circle (although sometimes it resembles an oblong or parallelogram, but the Meditation Parallelogram of Charleston didn’t have quite the right sound.) http://themeditationcircle.com/

'350ppm' Climate Awareness Day

Saturday Oct 24th

6 - 7 pm 1Sky will be partnering with UUC to participate in an International '350ppm' day of  action to raise awareness about climate change. 350ppm refers to the amount of carbon dioxide in the air. It should not go over 350 parts per million, a message that needs to go to the climate change gathering in Denmark.  ( visit http://www.350.org/ ) At the event we will be watching films about climate change to educate people and then generate calls to our Senators so that they will vote for strong climate legislation this fall.  During this time there will also be a potluck, so bring your favorite covered dish and your desire to change the world.

1Sky was created in 2007 to focus the power of millions of concerned Americans on a single goal: bold federal action by 2010 that can stem global warming. For more information, please contact locally Andrew Porter at andrew@greencorps.org or visit http://www.1sky.org/

Pittsburgh's Anne Feeney returns to UUC with her warm 'Irish' wit and 'Mother Jones' edge. Activist and eyewitness from the frontlines... ‘minister of culture’ to the environmental, labor, women’s and anti-war movements. She is on a 20 date Mid-West tour with Oregon's David Rovics. Rovics is another accomplished singer-songwriter who tours regularly throughout North America, Europe, and occasionally elsewhere.

Both are really good,  will make you laugh, make you cry, and make the revolution irresistible ! Suggested Admission $15, no one turned away for lack of funds. Sample some of their music on their 'myspace players': http://www.myspace.com/annefeeneyreally and http://www.myspace.com/davidrovics
