October 2009 Sundays

Children start in the service and leave for their Rainbow Sunday School classes after the 'Story for All Ages'.

October 4:  “Traces of the Trade.”  We observe Unitarian Universalist Association Sunday which celebrates diversity with guest speakers Dain and Constance Perry, who are member of the family featured in the documentary “Traces of the Trade.”  The Perrys are an interracial couple, and the sermon will include a conversation among Constance, Dain, Mel and Rose on issues of racism.  Speakers:  Constance Perry, Dain Perry , Rev. Mel Hoover, Rev. Rose Edington; Worship Associate:   Julian Martin.

October 11:  “Home.”  Is your home an actual physical place, a memory from childhood, a place you want to visit, or a place you long for?  What is your religious or spiritual home?  The Covenant Groups explore the theme of home this month, as do all of us in this service.

Minister:  Rev. Mel Hoover; Worship Associate: Jack Hickok.

October 18:  “UU Beliefs:  The Cambridge Platform.”  A platform is something you can stand on.  In 1648 our UU forebears created the Cambridge (Massachusetts) Platform as their statement of theological organization.  The language may be archaic, but we continue to stand on that platform, which distinguishes us from Episcopalians and Presbyterians and shows how we’re organizationally related to Baptists.  This is part of the series of “How do we believe what we believe?” that will appear from time to time throughout the year.  Ministers: Rev. Rose Edington and Rev. Mel Hoover; Worship Associate:  Malyka Knapp-Smith

October 25:  “350ppm, Anne Feeney and Dave Rovics.”  Environmental justice concerns and music coalesce for this service.  The UUA’s Green Sanctuary is one of the backers of the 350ppm effort – the Oct 24 International Day of Climate Action; to promote with joy the wonder of the earth and the need to return carbon dioxide to no more than 350 parts per million of earth’s atmosphere (it is currently at 390ppm which is contributing to global climate change); and to encourage success at the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark.  See more about Anne and Dave, who will be in concert at UUC Saturday Oct 24, elsewhere in this newsletter. This is a return visit to UUC for Anne.  Guests:  Anne Feeney and Dave Rovics, musicians and messengers; Rev. Mel Hoover and Rev. Rose Edington, Worship Associates.

November 1:  “A Ceremony of Remembrance.”  We close out the Halloween weekend by remembering all those souls who have gone before us, especially those who suffered as a result of being accused of witchcraft, as in the Salem, Massachusetts witch trials.  Speaker:  David Miller; Worship Associate:  Amy Weintraub.
