Star Parties

SPECIAL NOTICE:  The Endeavour Center has moved a few tenths of a mile to what was Los Padres Elementary School, at the intersection of Mountain View Boulevard and Katsura Avenue, alongside Manzanita Charter School.  Club meetings will be held at the new location, while the observatory remains at the old Maple High School campus.

A star party is an event where observational astronomy enthusiasts gather under dark skies to view the heavens above.  Please see our newsletter for the current schedule and locations.

VAAS holds its new moon star parties along Figueroa Mountain Road near Ranger Peak during the warmer months of the year, usually at Site 1.5, as we call it.  We use locations at much lower elevation from November through February and also for third-quarter star parties.  Select the links below for directions to the appropriate site.

Star party etiquette should be followed as much as possible.  Bright lights ruin night vision, so try to get there before it gets dark and use a red flashlight or keep flashlights off.
These events are weather-permitting, and the number of club members attending can vary a great deal due to a variety of reasons.  So we can't guarantee you will find anyone there even if it's on our calendar.  If you are participating for the first time, it is best to coordinate with a club member that is going.
