Performances
Through performances, members of the
Virginia Children's Chorus
have the opportunity to demonstrate what they have
learned, sharing their wonderful gift of music with
others. Performance schedules vary by choir group, with
the youngest choir singing in small community concerts,
while the Concert Choir performs regularly with the
Virginia Symphony and other choruses. Past
performances with the Symphony include Carmina Burana,
A Midsummer Night's Dream (see above photo with
Maestro JoAnn Falletta), and Of Heroes and Human
Rights, as well as the annual Holiday Pops series.
Collaborations with other arts organizations have
included the Cantata Chorus, Virginia Chorale, Ohef
Sholom temple choir, Bay Youth Orchestras, Virginia
Ballet Theatre, Schola Cantorum, the U.S. Continental
Army Band and the Virginia Symphony Chorus.
The VCC presents two festive family concerts each season
in which all the children have the opportunity to
sing. Performances highlight folk music from around the
world, as well as classical, sacred and
twentieth-century pieces, and include such works as
Malcolm Dalglish's inspiring Hymnody of Earth,
and Of Thee I Sing, a stirring collection of
patriotic songs, commissioned by the Chorus and arranged
by John Yankee.
The Chorus presents many fine local community
concerts each season, such as Portsmouth's Olde Towne
Holiday Music Festival and Norfolk's Arts Within
Reach. The children have had the opportunity to tour
the state of Virginia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C. and
Great Britain, have attended the International
Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales and made their debut at
Carnegie Hall in New York City in June 2005.
