O magnum mysterium
et admirabile sacramentum, ut animalia viderent Dominum natum, jacentem in pręsepio. Beata virgo, cujus viscera meruerunt portare Dominum Christum, Alleluia! -from the Christmas Mass text O magnum mysterium... What a mystery! How grand! How infathomable! An event beyond human explanation, something that only GOD could do. The skeptic may say, "prove it happened and I'll believe." I must answer, "ask God to prove it to you - He will." But how to put it in child's terms? To explain it to them in a way that conveys the essential wonder of a "mystery", not one that is solved in less than 20 chapters! To understand it down to the deepest core of my being that I can live it without compromise or fear? Ponder the words with me, if you will. et admirabile sacrementum... An awe-filled sacrament! Holy and sacred, one that inspires me to live like my Lord. Fully God. Fully man. Yet without sin... I'm not there, oh, I'm not there yet!... ut animalia viderent Dominum natum, jacentem in pręsepio... The animals witnessed what we can only imagine - their Creator lying in a manger. Did they know? Did His earthly parents understand? He who created living with His creation? Sounds like heaven, doesn't it? Beata virgo... Blessed virgin! A pregnant virgin? A faith based on what seems to be a medical impossibility! Yes and yes! Not once but twice - once in His birth and once in His resurrection! Mary felt and knew what pregnant women have pondered since through the ages, the kindling of life from within. Each kick, each roll and stretch a reminder of the Lord who was to come. "Expecting" takes on a whole new meaning! She was a willing servant, giving of her body to grow His earthly form, her life given to nuture, protect and then to worship her first-born Son. Blessed, indeed! Cujus viscera meruerunt portare Dominum Christum... She was found worthy to give birth to the Lord Jesus. What an uncommon faith in a common Jewish girl! Willing to be a servant, to hold loosely her child, God's appointed Messiah. As a human mother, I am reluctant to give up my children to their God-directed lives. How humbling and challenging... Alleluia! Oh yes! Praise the Lord! For such a gift! For such a magnificent mystery...
O great mystery
and awe-inspiring sacrament, that animals would see the newborn Jesus sleeping in their trough. Blessed be the Virgin Mary, whose loins were worthy to bear Christ the Lord, Alleluia. May the wonder of the Mystery be yours this Christmas! From our home to yours- |
