The Beauty of Each Hour

One lone seagull over the beach at Harbor Island.

For the beauty of the earth,
of the day and of the night,
Hill and vale, and tree, and flower,
sun and moon and stars of light,
Lord of all, to Thee we raise
this our hymn of grateful praise
Folliott S. Pierpoint.

Summer's over, at least by the school's calendar. Hard to believe that we are back to another round of backpacks and book reports. We just started to get used to the the relaxed rhythm of summer. As the days and weeks flew by, we crammed in trips to the beach, camping, romps at the pool, firefly hunts, bike riding, swings in the hammock and many a grilled burger.

The last few dozen tomatoes are ripening now, and I can see the heat stress on the plants. They are ready to give up soon and let the first frost come. I'm waiting for that last tomato to ripen, that final batch of peppers to redden. I confess I'm not quite ready for autumn to come.

As I yearned for "more summer", however, I realized that I needed to change my thinking. Each phase of the moon, each part of the procession from bud to flower to fruit, each turn of the season is another testimony to God's faithfulness. When I am looking ahead, (or behind) wishing for something to happen sooner or longer, I think I'm missing something. There's beauty waiting for me right now. Can I see it? God is at work in my life and in my family's. Am I attuned to it? His faithfulness never changes day in, day out, year after year.

There seems to be a trick to living within the day, a balance between wishing for yesterday, planning for tomorrow and enjoying the present. Advertisers want us to lust after that next holiday (and BUY BUY BUY!) Frantic from preparing for this holiday or that special occasion, I forget to kick back and enjoy today! Each season, every event, all of the days I spend here on this earth - each one is a special gift from God. Am I too busy getting ready for the "next" event that I forget about the current one? Are you? I want to see the "beauty of each hour" today.
