Psychic Perception and Physiology Part I

by Vincent Paradis

Introduction

"Psi info" is the name that I give to info that has apparently been sensed directly by our mind and not through our physical body senses of seeing, hearing, touch, etc.

Although to date, 2006, no one knows how a person, at times, can sense what another person has thought or experienced ( telepathy ) or, on occasion, senses info about something that is occurring beyond our imminent environ, far away, which our physical senses could not sense ( ESP ) or sense info about an event that will occur in time, in the future ( precognition ), we know that it happens.
And since our mind ( psyche ), brain, and body are one, it can be reasonably assumed that some physiological, physical, changes in activity must occur in our body when psi info is sensed or perceived.

Strong and Weak Psychic Perception Effects

When a strong perception of some psi info occurs, a shift in your state of consciousness and alertness occurs. The psi info comes to your mind, into your consciousness, it attracts your attention, and you suddenly become aware of it. Psi info when it comes to mind seems to come out of blue, out of nowhere. Similar too how when a creative thought, a solution to a problem, or recall of something you were trying to remember, just comes to mind.

The psi info can come to mind as an idea, an image, a vision, or a loud voice talking is mentally heard, or you suddenly get a strong feeling about something. If the strong perception occurs in a dream, it can awaken you from your sleep.

If your body at such time was wired up to electronic instruments monitoring your body's different physiological activities, a lot of changes would be noted. For instance, one noticeable change of activity that would occur is that your pulse rate would have increased and become stronger.

After the info is perceived and you have gained awareness of it, the next thing that would happen is that you would attach some meaning to the info and have some kind of emotional reaction to it. And, of course, your emotions, your feelings, and the sensations felt about something will also affect your body's physiological activity. More changes would occur. And if the psi info is very important, the emotional affect on your physiological activity would also be greater.

To recap, basically certain distinct events occur when you have a strong psychic perception; the psi info is sensed and comes to mind, you become consciously aware of it, mental activity increases, your attention is aroused, you become more alert, you have an emotional reaction to the info, and without question some measurable physiological activity changes occur.

But psi info is not always perceived so strongly. Most times psi info comes to mind at a lower level of intensity and strength. The psi info can come to mind as a fleeting thought, a momentary thought, or as a faint voice heard coming from a distance, or a slight change in your feelings occur. The psi perception occurrence attracts your attention only briefly. And if you do not pay further attention to it, the psi info you just perceived is soon forgotten. Nevertheless, in such cases, if you were wired up, some momentary change in normal physiological activity would be noted when the psi info is briefly perceived.

Subconscious Psychic Perceptions

From what foregone said, it can be reasonably postulated that we, at times, do sense psi info that is of such a low level that it does not come into consciousness, not even for a brief moment, or that may occur in one of our dreams but we do not remember the dream. In other words, we, at times, experience subconscious psychic perceptions but do not know it.
( Incidentally, everyone has dreams when sleeping, even animals, and although you may not remember any dreams or only remember a dream sometimes, you do dream every night. )

Some EEG Experiments

In the 70's I did a few simple experiments which prove to be quite interesting. At the time, for a few weeks, ideal conditions existed. There was a volunteer perceiver who was interested in the subject of ESP and who practiced meditation and thus could relax at will. We all had some time to devote to some experiments, EEG lab equipment and chart recorder, assistance, and a quiet room were available. In addition to that, nobody had any major problems, negative disturbances, going on in their lives. There was nothing negative that could affect the experiments. It has generally been noted by experimenters in this field, that negative people such as skeptics, negative conditions such as feeling tired or upset, time constraints whereby you need to hurry, etc. can interfere with psychic perception of psi info.

The setup was as follows. The perceiver's head was wired to an EEG electronic instrument. ( An Electroencephalograph is used to monitor the frequency of the brain's electrical activity or brain waves. The brain waves frequency, from the lowest frequency to the highest, for convenience, are designated, Delta, Theta, Alpha, and Beta. )

I used numbered cards 1 - 10. A card was randomly picked and the sender looked at it. He would then put the card face down on the table. No one else saw or knew the number on the target card, only the sender. After allowing some time for the perceiver to achieved a relaxed Alpha predominant state of brain activity, another person would slowly count out loud the numbers from 1 to 10. The perceiver had only to be relaxed and let or allow the psi perception of the number to occur .

The result of these few experiments indicated that the perceiver's relaxed Alpha state shifted momentarily into higher frequency activity known as Beta when the target number was called out before returning back to Alpha activity. This indicated that the perceiver has sensed the number the sender was thinking about. Most times the perceiver reported not knowing when the psi info was sensed because nothing came to mind and she felt nothing, no change. But one time she mentally saw the number, it came to her mind as a large bright number upon hearing it called out. Most times though, it was the EEG alone which noted the occurrence that psi info was sensed by her. These experiments were most enlightening, they showed that a psi info perception can occur and be so subtle, occurring at a subconscious level, that it is not noticeable by an individual even though a physiological change occurred in the body and was recorded.

In speculation, one would expect that if an event of grave importance to an individual was going to happen that psychic perception of such info would occur, manifest strongly, and burst into consciousness. But considering all disasters that occur which very few people pre-sense, it appears we tend to sense info only about those things we are involved with or show interest in.

Info from the book Dream Telepathy

It has been estimated that over 50% of psi info that is sensed manifests in dreams.

In the 1960's, dream telepathy experiments were being performed at the Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. The sleeper was wired up to an EEG. In these experiments the EEG was not used to detect when a psi info perception occurred but instead was used to detect and inform the experimenter of when the volunteer was dreaming. Dreams occur on the average five times a night and we usually remember the last dream of the night .... if a dream is remembered at all.

The objective of these experiment was to show that telepathy can occur in dreams, that a sender can communicate, transmit, direct, info to a sleeping person and that such info would be integrated and appear in the person's dream. The sender, located in another room, would look at a picture that was selected at random. When the EEG detected that the sleeper was dreaming, he or she was gently awaken and asked to report their dream. This continued throughout the night. At the end of the experiment, judges would look at the dream reports and decide which picture matched the dream.

In one experiment the picture randomly selected was Animals by Tomayo. The painting pictured two vicious dogs eating some pieces of raw meat and there was a large black rock in the background. The second dream report "..... was about Vermont. Black Rock, Vermont " ".... I was at the beach and I was sitting on one of the rocks .... and I felt like that mermaid from Black Rock...." The third dream report " .... I was at a banquet ... I was eating something like rib steak ..."

These experimenters were not only enlightening on the fact that psi info can manifest itself in dreams, but that psi info can manifest itself literally, symbolically, associatively, and integrate itself in a dream story.

These experiments proved that dream telepathy is a genuine phenomena and that psi info can be sensed, appear in our dreams, and that you would be unaware of such occurrence if you did not remember your dream or if the dream did not wake you up. But it is most likely that if the psi info was of great importance to you, it would awaken you from your sleep or you would remember the dream in the morning.

Info from the book Executive ESP

A somewhat similar but different telepathy experiments were done by Douglas Dean and John Mihalasky. They used a plethysmograph. (A plethysmograph is an electronic instrument which monitors physiological changes in blood volume and pulse pressure from one finger.) The volunteer was wired up and proceeded to go to sleep. A sender in the other room would proceed to randomly look at different people's first name. When the sender looked at a name the sleeper knew, a distinct blood volume change occurred. The sleeper was unaware during sleep, and unaware upon awakening that he or she has experienced physiological changes when a name that they knew was mentally communicated to them. It should be noted that when negative conditions existed, results were negative.

From the above, it can be seen that psychic perceptions can manifest in our conscious state of mind during times when we are relaxed, or in dreams when we are asleep, and at times, psi info may be subconsciously sensed and we may not know it happened, but the occurrence can be noted by monitoring for changes in physiological activity.

Psi Info Manifestation

To sum up, what psi info a person senses and perceives seems to be only about what they have an interest in or can relate to. And there are many ways in which psi info that has been sensed manifests itself and is perceived.

For instance, It can come to mind in a vision on our mental movie screen. It can be heard, a mental voice speaks. It can come in a dream. A sensation is felt, a change in feelings occur, a emotion stirs about something or a thought. A change in consciousness or alertness occurs with something that is thought. A muscle may twitch. And the body's physiology activity such as pulse, blood pressure, and breathing can momentarily be affected, that is, a change in activity occurs, when psi info is sensed and perceived.

All these things can happen, and more, because our brain is very complex, being both compartmentalized and interconnected within itself and our body that when our mind senses some psi info, many different activities occur as the psi info begins to work its way up into our consciousness and manifest itself, in all sorts of different forms, whereby we can gain awareness aware of it. The way I look at it, a small amount of brain activity occurs when psi info is sensed. More activity occurs when the sensed info is subconsciously perceived. And more activity occurs when the info is consciously perceived. And depending on how the psi info is perceived so is the part of the brain that would show most activity.

Perception of psi info generally occurs when your mind relaxes or is relaxed doing some routine activity and not particularly thinking about anything, a casual aware state, and in dreams.
