What Do You Think?
Why are we so suprised that a group of soldiers massacred innocent people?  How is that "colateral damage" different from the very first bomb that was dropped on Iraq?  Do you remember?  It was one of those bunker busters, and we actually thought we had targeted Sadaam himself.  A lot of non military civilians died because of that decision to begin the war.  That decision came from some place way up top!  No one is considering pressing charges there!
I am not in favor of war, but I am also not in favor of holding soldiers criminally responsible for behavior that is a direct consequence of being in war twenty-four seven.  Training for war, like it or not, requires crossing a line, the line from civilized to uncivilized.  A person risks a great deal crossing that line.  One of the risks is getting to a point of not being able to discriminate who is the enemy.
The soldiers involved in the massacre need A LOT from us, we the people who sent them there in the first place.  What they don't need is criminal prosecution.  What they do need is assistance coming back across that line.
As long as we are going to continue to believe in war as a viable way to resolve conflict, then we have to learn to live with the atrocities of war, and every thing that happens in war is an atrocity. As a nation, we all have to be responsible for the atrocities.
