TGIF
Where has the week disappeared to?  More properly, to where has the week disappeared?  Now you really know it's been one of those weeks! One of the top terrorists is dead.  It was not a big enough event to drown out the howling about immigration.
I paid my utility bills today--all those utilities we take for granted.  Our dryer is on the blink, and next Tuesday, someone will come out to repair it.  In the meantime, we talk to the dryer and sometimes swear at it.  When all else fails, we hang the clothes up to dry the way we used to a long time ago and the way many folks still do!
On Sunday, I'm going to a celebration.  Sister Doris, a Benedictine nun, is celebrating fifty years of committment.  Wow!  A few years back, she dropped everything she was doing to drive me home--a ten mile round trip--to retrieve a spare car key.  It was one of those many times I managed to lock the keys in the trunk.  And when she gets to the pearly gates, the voice will say, "And when I locked my keys in the trunk of my car, you...."
I know many people work on the weekend.  So it is a little difficult to say, "Have a good weekend," but I'll say it anyhow.  I'm working this weekend myself--teaching a parenting class tomorrow.
The best part about Friday is the banks close for the weekend, and I can stop worrying until Monday morning at 9 a. m. whether or not I have enough money to cover all the bills I paid today!  It's really okay to stop worrying for a couple of days!

DISCONNECT
There are so many daily experiences from which, over time, we have learned to become emotionally disconnected.  For example, we drive the freeways, disconnected from the inherent and looming dangers.
We have also become disconnected from the atrocities of war.  We read about them in the news, we watch video clips on television, we see the dead bodies of both the enemy and our own soldiers, we watch interviews of maimed soldiers returning home.  The atrocity of it all somehow gets buried by the high price of gasoline from which we are also gradually disconnecting!
I don't have an answer, but it is this same disconnect that makes it possible for soldiers to go to war in the first place and to do the unthinkable, namely kill and maim the enemy.  The problem is that when you disconnect, you run a HUGE risk.  At some point, the enemy becomes EVERYONE!  It is part of the process that we cannot control.  We need to take responsibility for putting our soldiers in that risk and not shift the blame when the killing gets out of control.  And that too is an oxymoron!
