SWEAT IS SWEET AND HOLY! YES TO SWEAT!
It's my understanding that SWEATING is a spiritual experience in the Native
American culture. I thought about that yesterday as I treated myself to sweating. I jumped out of bed on Father's
Day morning at five thirty and walked six point two miles (10 K). Why? Perhaps just to sweat! The accomplishment was
SWEET!
Then, later in the afternoon, the bug bit me again, and I walked another four miles, two miles
of which were up a very steep incline. Boy did I sweat! It was during that second walk that I had a wonderful
and delightful cellphone conversation with my son. That was really sweet!
These days, my sweating up a storm takes me back to last September when I was out working
in the yard, sweating and brooding and brewing a calderon of anger. I brewed so much anger that I nicked three of my
fingers with a chain saw. Coming that close to digital disaster was indeed a spiritual experience. Having ten fingers was
sweet!
I continue to brew calderons of anger from time to time, but now when I do, I'm reminded
almost automatically of the attacking chain saw. It's enough to make me chill out and remember that sweating
under any circumstances, is a way to get close to God, not dismember myself.
I still have problems seeing through to the spiritual when I start sweating when I'm all dressed
up! I also have difficulty on Monday and Wednesday mornings when I'm usually huffing and puffing it from the parking
lot to the University Counseling Center. It's about a half mile jaunt. When I arrive, I almost need another shower.
The real problem is that I leave the house a little too late to be able to park and stroll. So perhaps God is knudging
me to snooze a little less and to leave a little earlier.
So what about the saying, "Don't sweat the small stuff"? By not sweating the small
stuff, maybe I'm missing a spiritual opportunity. Or maybe the sweat that rolls off my forehead over small stuff is
again God's knudging, "Thanks for sweating, Vern, but I got it handled!" What a sweet God!
So, as the days heat up and the sweat rolls, try to remember it's just the season for holiness.
And that odor? Well, it's just got to be the sweet odor of sanctity!
