R |
Restate the issue in an introductory paragraph. Assume your reader has never heard about this issue before. It is up to you to explain the controversy or problem and to give some basic details from supporters’ and opponents’ views. End your introduction with a thesis statement (your thesis statement should tell whether you support or oppose the issue.) |
A |
Answer each bullet (this is a bullet à ●) Each bullet should correspond to its own body paragraph. Therefore, three bullets = three body paragraphs! Easy! Each body paragraph should have a topic sentence.
G |
Give reasons to support your answers. Your reasons may be taken from the article (quote or summarize.) Your reasons may be based upon personal experience. Your reasons may be based on situations from current/historical events. Your reasons may be based on studies or statistics. *Don’t know any statistics? Make ‘em up! “Nine out of ten readers agree that statistics are often quite convincing!”
E |
Explain! Explain why the reasons you have given support you point of view. Use transitions to reconnect to the thesis. Connect the dots for your reader... “Therefore, the proposal to blah blah blah would be the wrong choice.” |
S |
Summarize the issue and your supporting points in a conclusion. You are basically restating and reminding your reader as you wrap up. Ideally, you might provide some final commentary on the issue, or offer some analysis showing how the issue reflects on the society or our times. “In the end, all this talk of technology makes one wonder if...” |
