Trip Wire

Wire, which has been making music since--I don't know--1977 or so, doesn't always make catchy songs but check out their "new-wavey relationship-gone-sour" gem "One of Us" which is free to download from their website. Seriously dope; makes me want to go through my '80s music collection again.

  • "New-wavey relationship-gone-sour"? Has Pete gone Emo?

  • Big Deal. Golden Earring has been around longer.

  • Pretty cool song! How was that big '80s box set you got a while ago? Any cool stuff?

  • You speak of Left of the Dial: Dispatches from the 80s Underground. There's some good stuff there but I didn't find any new favorite bands (I was already sold on Camper Van Beethoven, The Go-Betweens, R.E.M., etc.).

  • Gotcha.

Do you own that Kate Bush collection from many years ago ("This Woman's Work")? I remember you taped me a bunch of B-sides from it when I was at Clown College.

  • That's the type of info MCs and posse usurpers can use against me. Why don't you just tell everyone about the time a Kate Bush impersonator sang "Wuthering Heights" to me in a piano bar while you're at it?

  • I won't mention that she had a cock, either.

  • There's no way around it: "Ariel" was wack (although thanks for sending it to me). It was even worse than Leonard Cohen's "Dear Heather."

  • Y'know, from a reputation enhancement perspective, Leonard Cohen ain't that much farther up the pansy ladder from Ms. Bush. Next you'll be opining that Jeff Buckley's cover of "Hallelujah" made you cry. Man up, nancy!

Oh, and compared to "The Red Shoes," "Ariel" was a masterpiece, yo.

  • "Ariel" was a pretty good record. It's got some definite rough patches, including a genuinely terrible opening track, but overall it's solid. I agree about "Red Shoes," but I think it's got a few nice moments, like that Prince song.

As for Leonard Cohen, he gets a lifetime pass on the gay charge just on the basis of the song "The Future."

  • BTW, OTD, if you want to diminish your reputation even further, I just got a couple of Cure best-ofs you might be interested in.

  • OTD: no blog, no Facebook. How am I supposed to keep current on hardcore?
