Have you heard about the Fiber CSA?

For Breeze Hill Farm, raising fiber producing animals has been a way of life for 15 years and while we have enjoyed the luxury of producing our own wonderful fibers to work with, many of you are not able to enjoy that same luxury. So what does one do, if they want to reap the benefits of the fiber farm life? Join our Spring Fiber CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) and become a part of the fiber raising experience.

Many of you are familiar with what a CSA is but for those of you who do not, here is a quick explanation of the basic idea. A CSA is a way to buy direct from the farmer. A farmer offers a certain number of “Shares” to the public. Typically, the “share” consists of a box of vegetables but other farm products may be included. Interested consumers purchase a “share” (aka “membership” or a “subscription”) and in return receive a box of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season (see www.localharvest.org for a full description).

Much like the traditional CSA, a Fiber CSA is a way to receive harvest direct from the the farmer too. There, of course, are differences. Starting with what you receive as part of your “share”. We are offering two types of “shares”. A “yarn share” or a “roving share”. Secondly, it is not a weekly harvest, instead it is a full season harvest. Unlike the traditional CSA share a Fiber CSA share can be purchased and shipped to anywhere in the world!

For those of you who have been our devoted customers, this concept may seem similar to a project we developed and have offered before. In the late 90's, when the fiber industry took a down turn and most fiber producers were culling out their stock, we were facing the same issues and offered "shares" in our operation. We did it on a much smaller scale and for only one season. As you who participated know..we had great success with this and are hoping for the same again.

This is how it works. We shear all of our animals in the Spring. After all of the fiber has been skirted and cleaned of vegetation, stomach and chafe (neck fiber), it is bagged and boxed to be sent to the processing mill. Next, the folks at the mill do their “processing thing” (souring, carding and spinning) and the finished product will be the yarn or roving shares that you have purchased. This is a process that takes months because of mill backlog. The next step is sorting out the shares. Once this is done, those shares will be ready for pick or shipped to you.

So, what are you going to receive as your share? We cannot emphasis enough on this one...we will not know the exact harvest until it is divided out from the mill. We do know that there will be no less than 5 skeins of blended yarn (RomneyxBorder LeicesterxAlpaca) for the “regular share”. In an effort to make sure that everyone receives a generous harvest, we've limited the number of shares to 75 blended fiber and 10 shares of 100% Alpaca yarn. Each share will also include Breeze Hill Farm's own specially formulated Wool Wash and our well loved “Knitter's Fingers” balm. We will keep you updated on Farm happenings and the harvest progress via our Blog or email

The cost of our Fiber CSA is $150.00 and can be purchased through our Internet Store (click “Shop” on the Nav bar). Keep in mind that a Fiber CSA Share would make a wonderful gift too!

Breeze Hill Farm is a no kill farm, we do not process or sell meat. It would defeat our purpose if we did!
