I was stationed in Korea from August 1978 to
September 1979, and was assigned to HQ EIGHT U.S. ARMY as the Senior
Graphics Artist and Illustrator, and NCOIC of the Training Support
Activity Korea (TSAK) Graphics Art Branch. I was also the P.T. (Physical
Training) Instructor for my unit. I received a warm welcome from the
Korean artist, who worked there, and they wanted to keep my portfolio
for a while, they really did admire my artwork, and my abilities as an
artist.
I supervised a staff of 15 artist illustrators, both military and Korean nationals. I was assigned the task of organizing a team of artists to design a large mural for the new Combined Forces Command building, (see photos below). Only one of my military artists would volunteer to help with the task, but the Korean artists said that they would gladly work with me. They did and the finished project was a great success. I also received the Army Commendation Medal. I had a great time in Korea and met some wonderful people. The Moyer Arts & Craft Center director asked if I would be interested in starting and teaching an art class at the Craft Center. I loved the idea and took up the task and was very successful with it. In my class I had military dependents, DoD civilians, Korean nationals, and active duty military personnel. I also had the opportunity to meet and work with some of Korea’s professional and upcoming young artists. I was featured in the Pacific Stars & Stripes as the Pacific Personality, the KORUS. and the Korean Times We would go out on weekends around the city and the parks to draw and paint, and visit art museums. The Korean are really great people, and we always had a good time eating great Korean food and using chopsticks. To me, Korea is a wonderful country with wonderful people, and I will say that I was treated very special by the Korean people I had contacted with, both professionally, and socially. THANK YOU!
