I was stationed in Panama from January 1966 to January 1971; I was assigned to the communication section of U.S. Army STRATCOM as a team leader, and shift supervisor at the Army Overseas Switchboard. Because of my skills as an artist, I also worked in the Graphics Department on special projects. Panama was a great tour of duty and I liked it so much, I stayed for five years, and met a lot of wonderful people. The Latin American people were a joy to be with, the music, food, beaches, fishing, water skiing, skin diving, and the Latin dance, it was great! While stationed there, I enrolled in Canal Zone College to continue my education and training as an artist, something I always wanted to be. I received a degree in Fine Arts and devoted many hours drawing and painting, and learning from the local Panamanian artists, whom I felt were very good. The Panamanian artists allowed me to work with them. One of the great spots to paint or draw was the old city of Panama; the old structures and ruins were a great challenge. I became involved in the local community and started painting murals at local teen clubs and other organizations. The Jewish Welfare Board, located in Balboa, Canal Zone, allowed me to have a one man Art show that gave me confidence and lots of hope, that I could really become a good artist. Because of some very special people, artists and art teachers, I had the opportunity to study under, I was pleased with the progress I was making as an artist. I will always think of them each time I create a piece of artwork. I believe that God works through people that you meet in life to help you make your dreams a reality. THANKS TO ALL! I attempted to get my MOS changed while station there, but I was told that DA (Department Of the Army) would never approve it. I worked both in the graphics department, and in the communication section because of my artistic skills. That was not enough to get my MOS changed according to personnel and the Graphics Section chief. I received my orders assigning me to the Pentagon. I said, Wow! This is my chance to get my MOS changed because I will be right there at the Department of the Army. (MOS - Military Occupational Specialty).
