We create
Poetry of the Dance
when we join hands in a simple circle
and capture the essence of a poem
in our movement.
♦
In her choreographies,
Lucy van Leeuwen
combines her love of poetry and dance.
Dance, of all the art forms, is intangible;
like life, dance is a
fleeting moment of time.
It is the poets among us who give voice
to those fleeting moments of life.
The late American poet Lucille
Clifton described
the first poem to be when
someone walked out of a
cave and
looked up at the sky with wonder and said, “Ah-h-h.”
The American poet Ted Kooser
described
the stillness of winter solstice,
with wind being held in the heart of every tree
flowing to the end of each twig to form a bud.
The American poet Mary Oliver described
her belonging to the
earth
like a stone on a riverbed with
nothing between her and the white fire of the stars.
The Persian poet Rumi described
the soul as being here for its own joy
and love as tambourine feet
moving amongst palace
and ghetto.
The fleeting moments of life
are captured by poems such as these.
Lucy’s dances are
choreographed
to capture the essence of poems,
transforming poetry into dance
and dance into poetry.
