INTRODUCTION
A
career is not an end point for one’s work efforts, but rather is a living and dynamic journey.
Many things have changed. An individual will have
from three to five careers- not jobs - in her/his working life. The information one learns in her/his degree programs has
become much more perishable. Technology, work practices, and organizational relationships continue to evolve at an ever-increasing
pace, requiring an ongoing skills refreshment.
The traditional educational option “to return to school for an
advanced degree” is always available. But returning for an advanced degree is not always the most practical or right
solution. Are other options available? Yes. They’re called certificate programs.
WHAT IS A CERTIFICATE PROGRAM?
A certificate program is a body of coursework that
focuses on a specific subject area. Certificates are shorter in duration than a degree program. Certificate programs are usually
more practical than theoretical in nature and have a specific focus on job skills.
Completion of a certificate program tells the marketplace
that you possess current knowledge and skills to excel in a particular job. It also tells the marketplace that you are a self-starter.
Finishing such a program results in a Certificate of Completion which can be a valuable addition to your resume.
WHY CHOOSE A CERTIFICATE PROGRAM?
A certificate program might
be a better choice if any of the following descriptions fit:
- You have completed high school or some college and have been working in a dead end job or in a field that is shrinking
- You want to learn a skill set that will help you establish yourself on a career path
- You want to build on your existing skills to learn a different, but very focused, set of skills to help you change
careers
- You want to “test drive” an area that interests you while at the same time providing a sense of accomplishment for your
efforts.
If you see yourself fitting into any of the above
categories, then a certificate program might be the best option for you to continue on your career journey. A certificate
demonstrating a specific set of skills can enable you to get the next job you need to move your career in the direction you
want it to go.
CONCLUSION
How will you spend your three to five careers? A
certificate program can help you climb your “career ladder” or actually “careers ladder” by assuming jobs
that advance your career journey. Make it fulfilling and profitable! One can assume jobs with more responsibility and prestige
through a combination of superior on-the-job performance and additional skills. Certificate programs are a learning venue
that provides a focused means to update skills in a short period of time and are a valuable component in a lifelong learning
strategy.
