Robert and I play in the Society for Creative Anachronism, an international medieval re-creation society. The SCA
is basically reconstructive archaeology. We learn through doing. Anything that a person in the middle ages would have done,
someone in the SCA is probably doing it. The SCA period is anytime before 1600. SCA members play a "persona", a person they
are portraying who can be from any time, any country, but is understood to be visiting at a European court. We are selective
in our re-creation, but we do strive for accuracy as much as possible.
The SCA is different from Ren Faires because we do re-creation, not re-enactment (we
don't portray actual historical figures or events, just try to live as if we were in the time frame we've chosen for our persona).
We also tend toward more historical accuracy than Ren Faires, no elves or fairies.
Robert's persona is a circa 1300s German named Robert the Blade. He is squired to Baron Syr Otto von Schwartkatz, Knight
of the Society. Robert recently received his Award of Arms and is now Lord Robert the Blade. He is currently serving as senechal
of the Barony of Marinus, Kingdom of Atlantia.
Megan's persona is a 14th century Frenchwoman named Berengiere de Montbeliard. I have served as dance mistress of
past baronies, and teach both European dances and Middle Eastern dances (belly dance and folk dance).
