EARLY CAREER & EDUCATION

I graduated from Princeton University in 1983 with an A.B. degree in English Literature/Creative Writing and received the Daily Princetonian Award for my contributions to campus life. Prior to that, I graduated cum laude from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1979.

1983-1985

My first professional job in the New York theater was working for the legendary impresario Alexander H. Cohen.

From 1983 through 1985, I assisted him on the marketing of four Broadway shows -- including Carmen directed by Peter Brook, Nobel prize winner Dario Fo's Accidental Death of an Anarchist, Ben Kingsley in Edmund Kean and Play Memory directed by Hal Prince.

I was also involved in the casting and production of four television specials, including the 1984 and 1985 Tony Award broadcasts and the Emmy-nominated "Night of 100 Stars II".

During this time, I also served as Cohen's literary manager, reviewing script submissions and attending readings and showcases in search of new work to produce.

1982 & 1983

During the summers after my junior and senior years at Princeton University, I was one of three co-founders and managers of NewStage (housed at Theatre Intime on the Princeton campus).  At NewStage, I ran the box office, directed two musicals (Brecht and Weill's Happy End and the New Jersey premiere of William Finn's March of the Falsettos) and oversaw a popular late-night cabaret series.

During the school year, I also worked as a House Manager for the McCarter Theatre Company's music series.

1980 & 1981
As the Princeton correspondant for The Trentonian and The Courier-News, I wrote dozens of front-page and feature stories for these two New Jersey daily newspapers.

During this time, I also worked as a copywriter for the Book-of-the-Month Club's five monthly sales catalogues and evaluated submissions to the Quality Paperback Book Club.

1975-1979
I began my working life -- first as a volunteer and later as a paid staffer -- at the not-for-profit Citizens Committee for New York City, spending my school vacations helping to fulfill CCNYC's mission to promote volunteerism and community self-help, including one year as the administrator of its "Youth for Youth" incentive grant program.
