1) Bring

  • Your Clubs
  • Water, snacks
  • Towel
  • weighted club
  • Alignment tool (Practice T)
  • ipod (with Eyeline Digital Learning tracks)

2) Stretch

Get in a good posture then roll your head back and forth and front to back. Move to your shoulders and rotate them along with your head. Swing your arms, then twist at the trunk. Work the upper legs, then the lower legs. Stretch to your feet and then open and close your hands. Take a club and make small swings. If you have something like the GotchaReady put that on a wedge or use a weigted club.

3) Warm up

The goal of the warm up is to get in the groove of hitting golf shots, you are not practicing yet. Think about tempo during the warm up swings. Start with the shortest clubs and work your way up to the driver.

Lob Wedge - 30% of full swing hit 10 balls
Sand Wedge - 50% of full swing hit 10 balls
Pitching Wedge (gap) - 50% of full swing hit 10 balls, 80% hit 5 more balls
9-7 irons - 75% of full swing hit 10 balls with each club, its ok to alternate clubs
  6-4 irons - 75 % of full swing hit 8 balls each
hybrid 3 Wood (3iron) - 85% of full swing hit 8 balls each
driver - 90% of full swing hit 14 balls

Now its time to dial in distance control.
Sand wedge  -  hit pitch shots to target 50-60 yards 6 balls
pitch wedge - hit pitch shots 70-90 yards 6 balls

4) Digital Training

I use an ipod when I practice and a great use of the ipod is with Digital Learning from Eyeline Golf. With the ipod you can listen to tracks that explain a shot scenario, after listening pause the player and execute the shot. This is a great way to practice the way you play. There is also a play the course format where you play a round on the range. Great Stuff.

5) Putting

With two balls start with 3 footers and work your way up to 20 footers. Think about pace more than line. You are trying to get the feel for speed of the green. As a drill hit two balls from each distance. The goal is to make one and not leave it short.
Find a line with a break. Hit up, down left and right breakers.
Lag putts, Hit putts to the fringe of the green from more than 30 feet.
Fringe putts, Hit putts from the fringe with various clubs. Try your hybrid its ideal for long putts off the green.

6) Short Game

Our range has a short game practice area. Bring your chipping and pitching clubs to practice hitting to a target. The target greens have two flags on them so its a good idea to alternate shots to each so that you dont get into a groove. We want to work on the shots we find on the course. Practice getting to the hole with different shots. Crisp chips that check and spin, high lofted shots that land near the hole. If you can also hit shots from different lies. 10-12 balls with a sand wedge and lob wedge.

7) Distance Control tips

Hit each club the distance of 1 less club. This will enforce good distance control.

8) Range Games

If your range has flags, aim between them as if they were a fairway. Count the number of fairways hit with your driver and longer irons. Aim at the flags with mid and short irons as if they were the middle of the green. Count the number of greens hit with various clubs.

9) General range tips

Drink water and rest between drills. Be goal oriented and think tempo and simple swing thoughts. Practice your preshot routine so that it is automatic. Smile afer a good shot and don't over-analyze any bad ones. Always aim at something; a flag, patch of grass, ball picker.

Have fun and play well
