Plan on spending at least 1/2 a day to service your chipper. This is not a job that you want to rush. I took the pictures before doing the service.

You'll need a metric socket set, a metric open-ended box wrench set, a metric long hex key set, a grease gun, and a shop vac.

Chipper PTO drive shroud

Step 1: Remove the PTO drive shroud. It is held on with two bolts. You'll need a wrench to reach in and hold the nuts from underneath. Remove the shroud and put the bolts back together in the shroud holes so you don't lose them.

Step 5: Grease the feed roller bearings. Access to the outside bearing is quite simple. Grease both zerks.

Step 8: Remove the feed roller drive shaft. This is done by collapsing the two halves of the shaft together and lifting it out. You will end up with three pieces in your hand. The shaft tension spring, the male shaft assembly, and the female shaft assembly. Clean these parts, inspect for damage, and verify that the two halves of the shaft slide in and out freely.

Replace the Drive Belt

Step 11: Replace the feed roller drive belt. During normal operation, the drive belt gets severly worn. The replacement belt must be a reinforced farm belt. I use a Gates PoweRated 6838. (38"x1/2")

Belt Tension Adjustment

Step 12: Set the feed roller shaft belt tension. There are four bolts that hold the plate that the gearbox sits on to the unit and there are two bolts at the end that are used to tension the belt. It is important that the two pulleys are properly aligned while tighening the belt. Do not over tighten the belt.

Chipper Blade Access

Step 15 Cont'd: The head side of the bolts are easier to access if you use a 1x6 to prop up the feed roller and a 1x4 to wedge the blade. A long allen key and helper makes this even easier. Remove the feed hopper to give better access. Remove the springs and prop up the feed roller with a 1x6, wedge the blade with a 1x4. Use a screwdriver passed through a bolt hole to stop the blade from dropping in when the last bolt is removed.

Main Drive Bearings

Step 2: Grease the main drive bearings. There are two zerk fittings on each bearing. The shaft goes all the way through the flywheel and drives the feed roller gear box.

Step 3: Grease the PTO bearings. They have two zerks each and look a lot like the main shaft bearings.

Step 6: Remove the feed roller drive shaft shroud. (It's the yellow box in the picture). It is held on by 6 bolts.

Drive Shaft Release Mechanism

Step 9: Shown in the closed state, open the release mechanism by pushing the lever toward the feed roller and grease the interface and the sliding joint. This joint sould move freely and not bind. Inspect the two halves for any signs of rounded edges in the joint.

Gearbox Removed

Step 11 cont'd: The gearbox must be removed to replace the drive belt. Remove both adjustment bolts and three of the mounting bolts. The fourth will need to be loosened so the gearbox can be moved. Then the belt can be slipped out.

Backside Access Plate

Step 13: Install the drive shaft, and replace both shrouds.

Step 14: Remove the lower access plates and vacuum out any chip debris. There is an access plate on both the front and back sides of the flywheel housing.

Chipper Knife (1 of 2)

Step 16: Remove the knife blades by removing the bolts and then the blade. The blades need to be sharpened. Do not overheat the blade while sharpening it. Have an oil bath close by to dip the blade.

Step 17: Install knives as per torque spec on the knife access cover plate, install the cover plates.

PTO Bearings

Step 4: Adjust the drive belt tension. It is absolutely critical that the  PTO drive shaft and the main drive shaft are parrallel when you complete this step. The drive belts should deflect no more than 1/8" when you apply 10lbs of force to the belts. The four tensioning bolts should be adjusted at the same time and only in very small increments.

Step 7: Grease the inside drive roller bearing. It has two zerks pictured above.

Step 10: Drain and refill the gearbox with gear oil.The filler plug is the white plastic cap and the drain hole is the hex plug visible at the bottom of the green gear box.

Install New Belt

Step 11 cont'd: Install the new belt and reassamble the gearbox platform. Make sure that the slip mechanism on the gearbox side of the drive shaft is greased and operational.

Knife Access Panel Removed

Step 15: Remove the chipper knife access panel and the two knife blades. There are 4 bolts holding the knives in place. You will need a normal deep 17mm socket to do this, a pnuematic socket is too thick to fit in the flywheel hole.

ChipperAnvil.jpg
Chipper Anvil

Step 18: Inspect the anvil and replace if necessary. When you order a set of knives, they come with an anvil. After several seasons, the edge of the anvil becomes rounded and the anvil needs to be replaced. The anvil is held in by three bolts with the same tapered hex head as the knive blades. The gap between the anvil and the blade is 15-30 thousands. (About the thickness of a dime)

Step 19: Remove all of the support blocks from under the feed roller and reinstall all of the shrouds and coverplates. Make sure you have no spare parts.

Chipper_Dolly.jpg

NOTE: I made a dolly for the chipper. It makes it easier to work on and much easier to mount on the tractor. It has 4 heavy duty 3" castors and is made out of pressure treated 2x4 sides. and 2x12 base plates.
