How strong is the chipper? In the picture above, it is swallowing a dry red oak tree trunk, 6" in diameter at the base and over 30' long. Yes, the drive mechanism had to be throttled a few times, but the last 15' went in without any intervention.

The chipper is a no frills unit that takes about 4 hours to assemble. Improper assembly can result is serious injury including death. I am not a mechanic, nor a dealer, just a "Gentleman Farmer". So, take these instruction as just my diary on how I did it, nothing more and nothing less.

Feed Roller Ball Joint

Special Note: The feed roller drive shaft has a ball and socket joint at each end. This is the most fragile part of the chipper. If the two halves of the drive shaft do not slide freely, the ball nub will be pulled against a circlip that holds it in place. The circlip, barely visible, sits inside the socket in a groove about 2mm recessed. If during operation your drive shaft has become disconnected, either one of the ball sockets, or the shaft itself has become damaged and must be addressed. Most of the supporting dealers stock parts for the chippers.

Servicing the Chipper

Once the chipper is assembled, it must be serviced prior to it's first use. Depending on how hard the wood is, and what is attached to the wood, the chipper will need serivcing every 10-30 hours of run time. Again, failure to service your chipper properly can result in severe injury including death. If you are not comfortable with the risk, then contact one of the CTOA supporting dealers for assistance.
