Replacing the Jinma 224 Starter

All My Articles

The starter on my Jinma didn't like the cold at all. Anything below 30F caused it to perform badly. It would not engage the flywheel with the bendix. It would have to be cranked 1/2 a dozen times or so to engage, all the while running the glow plugs.

This problem is well documented, and often the only solution is to replace the starter. I put the project off for at least a year, just fearing where I hadn't gone before.

I'm writing this article to say, just do it. This entire repair cost $150.00 for a new starter from ARTRAC. It took 20 minutes to get out the tools, 10 minutes to replace the starter, 15 minutes to put the tools away, 15 minutes to take and download picutres, and two hours to put up the web pages.

Actual repair time: Under 1 hour.

I had known how easy this was, I'd have done it the first time the starter skipped.

Step 1: Disconnect the battery. Disconnect ground first, then the hot terminal.

Step 4: Remove the upper mounting bolt. It is behind the hydraulic line.

Step 7: Bolt the new starter in place. Put the upper bolt in first finger tight, then in stall the bottom bolt. Snug both down a little at a time alternating between them.

Step 2: Disconnect the electrical connections on the starter. There is a small guage connector and the big battery connection.

Step 5: Remove that starter. It will remove itself :-) if you don't support it properly in Step 4.

Step 8: Reconnect the electrical connections.

Step 3: Remove the lower mounting bolt. It is the lower bolt head visible in the flange.

Step 6: Make sure the gasket between the starter and bell housing is in place and in one piece. Visible here as the thin line in the middle of the flange joint.
