Glow Plug Replacement

All My Articles

The glow plugs on my Yangdong Y380 3 cylinder motor usually pull 23 amps when trying to start the tractor. This past summer, they started pulling less and less. At the end of fall, they were pulling 5 amps and the tractor had a really hard time starting.

Now that it's deep winter (single digit weather), the tractor won't start at any temperature under 30F without operational glow plugs. So I had to fix them.

Step 1: Disconnect the buss bar and verify that you have 12v at the feed line when energized.

Step 2: Remove the old glow plugs. Be very careful: Do not to let ANYTHING drop into the open hole. Make sure that you have removed the soft copper gasket (very small washer visable on tip) when the glow plug is removed.

Step 3: Install the new glow plug. Tighten it down until it makes contact and then tighen it up about 1/8 of a turn. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN. It takes a lot less torque to install a glow plug that it does to install a spark plug.

Step 4: Reconnect the buss bar.

The rest of this page is about repairing the motor when you get step 3 wrong.

If you overtighten the glow plug, it will shear off in the engine block. This is how to remove a sheared glow plug.

In the picture below, the nut at the top of the sheared glow plug has been reinstalled to help pull the center of the plug out. The good new plug in the picture is fully seated. Take notice of how much of the glow plug thread is exposed even when fully seated.

To remove the sheared plug: Pull out the center core of the glow plug. This can be done with a pair of visegrips. Grap the top and keep twisting. Once the core comes out, then you can insert a screw extractor into the plug. Slowly apply constrant pressure to remove the broken plug.
