Acquiring the tow vehicleOur HDT Tow Vehicle / Motorhome

2002 Volvo 770

We acquired the tow vehicle, a Volvo 770, aka Optimus Prime on March 21, 2006. There was a lot of research done to determine what the appropriate tow vehicle would be. Most of the research went into understanding weight ratings. A lot of additional research was done on how to acquire. Even with all of the reading I did, I did NOT find a reputable source when I acquired our truck. This was a $30,000 mistake when you add up the price I paid, and the amount of repairs that were hidden from me. This was the most expensive nightmare of this process. Others may benefit from this knowledge / experience, so the old pages are still available.

Now that we have the tow vehicle, it's our truck, it has to be safe, it has to be up to the job. The rest of the information on this page is broken down into subpages:

Final Note: An HDT might not be the best vehicle for everyone. It takes a little getting use to. They are big and heavy. Here are a few pics showing it's size compared to a long, high body Sprinter Van and parked in the family driveway. On the other side of the coin, I can turn it around in my driveway just as easily as I turn around my PT Cruiser.
