The fold down aluminum ladder is difficult for my wife to climb and the rung height is difficult for the vertically challenged.

A traditional ladder will make it feel like a jail cell at the dinnette, so the solution is an offset ladder.

The Offset Ladder
The offset ladder is set up based on your dominant foot, or in our case, my wife's dominant foot.

It has to be secured during transport, and it has be secured in the down position while driving.

Ladder Mount Detail

The mont mechanism is designed so that the ladder can be secured while in transit and stabilizes the ladder while climbing into the bunk. The bunk moves almost and inch while climbing into it.

The mount consists of a maple block attached to the front edge of the bunk and two 4" brass deadbolts. The slots in the side of the ladder are 1" long so that the bolts mechanisms can move up and down while climbing into the bunk.

Ladder Rung Detail

The rungs need to set into dados in the rails. A butt joint is not strong enough for this application. We will foten climb the ladder in bare or stocking feet. A normal rung doesn't provide enough support for your foot, so the rungs are 3 1/2" wide.
