| Console Mount Plate |
Console Construction
The design requirements for the console evolved during our first few trips. It didn't take long to figure out that both
driver and passenger had to be able to see the computer screen without the driver being distracted. It had to fold out of
the way so that you could still get into the back with reasonable access. It had to support a laptop computer without excessive
vibration under most driving conditions.
The upper portion of the console was almost obvious, it had to be an articulated arm that supported the laptop and could
be swung between the dirver's chair and the passenger seat. The passenger had to be able to type on it, the driver had to
be view the sceen with a quick glance.
The mounting plate was the hard part. How to mount the arm so that it could move out of the way and be held firm. The
mounting plate is pictured. It bolts to the engine housing and the vorad head unit under the dash.

The articulated arm consists of a hinged base, a pivoting arm, and a console top. The first picture shows the base and
pivot arm. It is made from a 6" lazy susan bearing and two pieces of 3/4" Birch plywood. The base is connected to the plate
by a 4" door hinge. It is supported by two folding leg supports. The pivoting arm connects to the other 1/2 of the lazy susan
bearing and a 1/4 carrige bolt and know are used to tighten it into position during travel so it doesn't flop around.
The console top is a purchased unit made out of 1/4" lexan. It ti mounted on a turned post at a slight angle (about 10
degrees). It is secured to the pivot arm using a carrige bolt and knob.
