Planning the Electrical System
Until the NYSDEC decided to take an interest in the property, the electrical system and NYSEG had been the most difficult
to deal with. We need 300 amps of service to the property. NYSEG will deliver 200 or 400, so we had to go with a 400
amp service.
The power pole can only be 100' max from the transformer, so we needed a power pole down at the road edge, then we ran
underground from there to the utility barn.
The power pole must have a circuit co-located with the disconnect switch, and although Square-D and Millbank both make
very nice 400amp meter sockets with disconnect switches in a side by side unified box, they won't let me use one.
I have to use the only NYSEG approved meter socket and a separate disconnect switch.
After getting the system finally designed, we acquired all of the parts and assembled the disconnect on the pole. We
finally got approval after a couple of seriously difficult hurdles. Without the gracious help of David L., it would have never
been completed. Thank you David.
