Nationwide Long Term Care Costs Compared to Massachusetts

In 2007, the average nursing home cost in the United States was $213 per day for a private room, or about $6,400 per month, up from $181 in 2003. But there are large variations from area to area, according to a recent market study released by the MetLife Mature Market Institute.  The average monthly cost for assisted living in 2007 was $2,969. 

However, in the Boston area, the average daily cost for a private room in a nursing home shot up to $297, or $108,000 annually, up from $232 per day and $84,680 annually in 2003.   Assisted Living facilities in Boston are averaging around $4,500 per month, but the range can be from $3,000 to $6,000.   See the link above for the full national survey.
