Established in October 2001,
the Liberty
Center for Survivors of Torture is our region’s central resource for the restoration of torture
survivors’ health, happiness, and hope, offering them linguistically, culturally, and therapeutically appropriate access
to an array of medical, mental health, legal, and social services. The Liberty Center utilizes resources that place participants in vocational training, volunteer activities, paid employment, and offers
participants opportunities to regain their sense of self-worth, renew their ability to enjoy life, demonstrate their talents,
openly express their fears and hopes, and face the future with confidence.
There are more than 5,000 survivors of torture
currently living as our neighbors in Pennsylvania and Delaware. Liberty Center participants
have come to the US for safe haven from over 40 countries—including Afghanistan, Albania, Angola, Bosnia, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Colombia, Congo, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Guinea, Haiti, Indonesia, Iran, Kenya, Liberia, Mauritania, Nigeria, Pakistan, the People’s
Republic of China, Peru, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Togo, and Uzbekistan.
Torture survivors constantly remind us of the
frightening extent and profound consequences of institutionalized violence, oppression, and genocide for individuals, families,
communities, and our world.
The Liberty Center is sponsored by Lutheran Children and Family Service
of Eastern Pennsylvania, an affiliate of Liberty Lutheran Services.
