REVIEW

Camera Obscura Issue #16 Mark Tucker

E.A.R.S. Records has found a fountain of cool waters in pianist D'Amico. He has one of the light-fingerst styles to come down the pike in ages. This is what one wishes Brubeck would get back to. Pure, sheer pleasure.

And, not only does D'Amico compose winners, he also has impeccable taste. Alongside his three self-penned gems ( plus one authored by drummer DiTommaso), dig what he's covered: Miles & Evans' "Blue in Green", Brubecks's "In Your Own Sweet Way", Freddie Hubbard's "Red Clay", and Wayne Shorter's "Footprints". God-amighty! For 50:26, it's piano heaven, in ultra-nightclub style.

Reverie is E.A.R.S.'s top act, but D'Amico is a dangerous contender. He's not out to distinguish himself as a new coming stylist, he just plays the tightest standard cool keys around. . .and plays the bejeezus outta them. A lot of pianists will not touch this stuff, it's the music equivalent of fine-line drawing: one thing gets out of place , even slightly, and you lose everything. Your touch has to be ice-confident, your timing absolutely perfect and your perceptions razor sharp. D'Amico breezes it. A new Ramsey Lewis/Ahmad Jamal with Corea sensitivities. Bassist Kenny Davis and Larry DiTommaso on the skins, are to-die-for backups. Their lines are well chosen, and if any of the three are more exploratory, it's Davis with his delicious little per mutated notes and minutely askew rhythms.

Highly, highly recommended ( if it weren't for the Carlos Beltran lp (see Music from Mexico section, this would be this issue's highest recommendation). D'Amico (he actually was a practicing priest at one time, hence the appellation) may well be the last of a dying breed - Guaraldi himself couldn't score on the money as solidly. Father John D'Amico Trio, Live At The Painted Bride (Encounter Audiophile Record Services P.O. Box 6403,Philadelphia,PA 19145)
