Lake Constance or Bodensee as seen from Birnau looking towards Pfahlbauten. July 11.

bodenseeastroart.jpg

Reliefkarte of part of the Bodensee. Note that North is downwards. The locations of Birnau, Pfahlbauten and Lindau (referred to in the photographs above and below) are marked. White lines represent passenger ship routes. Clicking to expand the map, one sees a tiny building symbolizing the church at Birnau on the bottom right. And there is a sign for Kressbronn about 4 stops down from Lindau. Tyrolean Alps on the top left. Europe's highest point, 'Zugspitze', lies in that direction but is off the map.

eurotriplindau.jpg

Clouds over Lake Constance as seen from Lindau near the German-Austrian border. At times, the brooding atmosphere cast by these clouds & their twisting shapes & tumbling motion are an impetus to the creation of sinister tales of imagination such as Frankenstein composed beside another similar lake - Lake Geneva - in nearby Schweiz. July 12.

Between Birnau and Lindau we found a wonderful restaurant, im Fischerdorf, in Kressbronn. im Fischerdorf is within yards from the northern shore of Bodensee. We had dinner - a wonderful platter - with a delicious rotwein - the Kressbronner Berghalde Blauer Spatburgunder whose label is pictured above. Next day, we tracked down a chap who made the stuff and ... you can guess the rest. A related rotwein, Steinhauser's Halbtrocken, was not to our taste.

*In the town of Hopferau on the outskirts of Füssen (expand the picture above & look at the map on bottom left) we stayed in a spacious & beautifully comfortable inn - Pension Keiß. The brochure for this inn is shown above. The view of the alps from this pension was superb. And in the evening we went to a tiny schloss for a concert. Local beer was served. What better way to relax! Hopferau was our last stop before Neuschwanstein (see below). July 12.

Looking out of a room in the Königerschloß. Bavarian Alps looming in the distance. A lake. And a morning sun to the left. July 13.
